Gabrielle sat on a log, looking out over the violent waves of the ocean. She pulled her jacket closer around her thin body, shivering from the cold. Her dark hair was blown around by the icy wind, but for some reason she felt it little.

A single tear fell from her eye, curving across her cheeks and falling silently onto the sandy ground beneath her. A smile was on her face, except it wasn't a smile of joy or tranquility. No, the smile held a deeper meaning, one of torture, pain, and guilt.
She pulled a picture frame from beneath her jacket and looked at it. Beneath the clear glass was a picture, one of the only ones she had left. It was a family portrait, taken some years ago. It was rinkled and torn, and parts were blurred from water contact. But you could still clearly see the three faces in it: Jonathan, Donatella, and Gabrielle Gamarra, smiling from it as though the world were okay.
It was taken at a picnic her school had a few years ago, back in eighth grade. She looked a lot different then, and not only because she was so much younger. She looked happier, healthier, and carefree. Her mother glowed, and in the eyes of Jonathen, you could see all the love he had for his family.
Gabrielle pushed the picture against her body and leaned forward, willing herself not to cry. "I miss you, Daddy."

"Gabrielle..." Jake walked up the beach and wrapped his arms around her. "You look sad." He cooed and pressed his face into her neck. "But I have something that might cheer you up... I want you to open it." He watched her open it, his brown eyes sparkling with delight. Inside the wrapping paper was a long velvet black box which contained a gold necklace: Engraved on the inside of the box was: "I love you as much today as I did yesterday but not as much as tomorrow." "I love you Gabrielle..." He grinned, he knew what day it was... he knew why she was so upset... that was why he was trying to cheer her up.

She smiled weakly at him, but his gesture of love did little to improve her mood. "Thank you," she said, "it's beautiful." She looked at the present, her heart swelling with affection for the werewolf.
She sighed and turned her head back towards the ocean. The relentless water crashed against the shore, and the air smelled strong of salt. "My daddy died today," she said, "two years ago. Last year... I didn't even think about it because I was moving around. Now it's really... it really hurts more now than it ever did."

"Good thing you have me now." He grinned and wrapped his arms around her waist. "I'm sorry that happened to you." He muttered. "I just wanted to try and help make you feel better." He laughed softly. "Is there anything that I can do to make you feel better?"

She shook her head, a shudder passing through her. "I wish there was... I really do. But there isn't anybody can do to make it better." She burried her face in his chest, restraining her tears. "Momma went home for the week, to New Orleans. She wanted me to come, but I said no. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back there, as much as I want to." She looked up at him.
Thunder roared in the distance.
"If it wasn't for you, I probably would have died. Not by my own hand, but by my... my... illness."

"You don't have to worry about any of that anymore..." He pulled her closer. "I'm here to protect you." He smiled softly down at her and let her rest her head against his shoulder. "I'll make sure that never happens to you and you know that right? No matter what Sam says I will always take care of you alright?" He kissed the top of her head.

She bit down hard on her lip, forcing the tears back. "I know," she whispered, "it's just really hard for me right now. I never fully... accepted his death, you know? And now everything's kind of hit, all at once. I mean, David's death I accepted... I accepted it quickly, despite how much pain I'm still in. I know he's dead, and he's never coming back. With my dad... there's a small hope in me that says he's still alive. I know he's not, I mean I saw his dead body, drained by that wretched, bloodsucking, life-stealing bitch of a vampire that stole him from me."
She bit down hard on her lip again, breaking the skin and drawing blood. But she didn't care. "If you ever leave me, I'll hunt you down, you know that?" She tried to make the very serious situation a little lighter, but it wasn't working. She still felt as if she was going to die. "You should have met me before. You probably would have liked me more."
